Play the game: “Where’s the O?”

  1. First, read the book through, enjoying the story and illustrations.

  2. Using your finger, or even better, letting the child do it, move the finger from left to right on each line, looking for the round “O.” You can go through the book this way, bringing the child the surprise of discovery.

  3. This can be repeated for the squiggly s.
    The bird with wings: w
    The standing stick: l
The little stick with a dot: i
The O with a bite out of it: c
    The O with a long tail: g

(You can invent names that appeal to you for any letter.)

If any of these letters can be recognized page after page, reading has begun! Once they have found the O, the w, and the l, they have read. Owl!
